Honeymoon destination ideas - home and away

Posted: Thursday July 28, 2016

Getting married is an extremely special occasion for any couple. But all that planning, eating, drinking, and dancing can really take it out of you! After the big day, you’ll absolutely want to get away and enjoy a relaxing and romantic honeymoon together.

Whether your preference is for a chilled mini-moon in the UK, basking in the tropical sunshine, exploring remote locations, or even taking a trip around the world, your honeymoon is the perfect opportunity to bring those dreams to life.

If you’re struggling to choose the perfect destination, there are a number of considerations to help narrow down the options. Most locations will generally have a high and a low tourism season. Optimal weather and sightseeing chances (along with greater expenses and bigger crowds) tend to fall in the high season; while milder climates, and a more chilled out vibe are typically found in the lower seasons.

A destination's high season typically correlates with that location’s best weather, but it can be determined solely by demand, too. High season in the Caribbean, where the weather doesn't change that dramatically throughout the year, runs from January to April simply because people from colder climates flock to sunny beaches to escape the winter chill. On the other hand, Florida theme parks are generally rammed in the summer months despite the high temperatures because the kids are out of school. With this in mind, here are our recommendations for a romantic honeymoon getaway in every season.

Spring honeymoons
Rich with music, art, food, and architectural delights, Europe offers some of the most romantic hotspots in the world - Paris, Amsterdam, Vienna, Prague, Santorini, Venice, the list goes on and we really are spoilt for choice. Wherever you choose to go, you’ll find quaint streets that will charm at every turn, operas, museums, and a sea of culture just waiting to be discovered.

Summer honeymoons
The UK’s southwest coast spans lush moorland and hundreds of sandy beaches, leading to the famous Land’s End. Frequently dubbed the Cornish Riviera, it is a stunning location offering picturesque harbours, towering cliffsides, and thrilling surf resorts. Rent a cute cottage, hire a boat house, or opt for boutique glamping in a trendy pod - simply step outside to be greeted by a tonne of activities against an array of stunning backdrops.

For those couples looking to let their sense of adventure get the better of them, the South Pacific Ocean is calling for you in the summer months (May-October). The rugged terrains of Fiji are dotted with blue lagoons and palm-lined beaches - a haven for surfers, mountain climbers, and divers alike. Across the water, the French Polynesia has a romantic bungalow perched on stilts over a turquoise lagoon, surrounded by tropical rainforest and fascinating volcanoes ready and waiting for the “just married” couple.

Autumn honeymoons
Imagine accommodation fit for royals, elegant four-poster beds, champagne and chocolates on arrival, fine dining immersed in rich culture, and cosy nights in by the fire. A honeymoon in one (or more) of the UK’s finest castles will give you all of this, and more - a brilliantly enchanting way to kickstart married life together.

Winter honeymoons
Escape the winter chill and discover the crystal clear water, soft golden sands, and stunning coloured corals of The Bahamas. These islands lend themselves well to a winter break (November-April) as the weather is beautifully warm but come summer things do change and become unbearably sticky and humid.

If you fancy something with a little more flair, then why not chase the natural wonder that is the Northern Lights in Iceland? October-March is when they are at their peak. Enjoy blissful sunsets and sunrises, relax and rejuvenate in the steamy Blue Lagoon on the geothermal valley to soak away those wedding stresses, or climb an Icelandic glacier and take in the breathtaking scenery.
